Studio Ho.'s "Carnival of the Animals": A Revolution in Clinic Waiting Area Design

Transforming Children's Hospital Spaces with Inspired, Interactive Design

Studio Ho. revolutionizes the concept of clinic waiting areas with their award-winning "Carnival of the Animals" design. Inspired by the story of Noah's Ark, this unique design aims to ease children's tension and create a relaxing, multi-level space filled with imagination and exploration.

Studio Ho.'s design stands out for its unique properties. The concept of paper craft and pop-up book is transformed into abstracted animal patterns and lines, cut from white steel plates. These plates are then painted to express the image of a rainbow, creating a vibrant and engaging environment for children. Mirrors are used to reflect the steel plates and create the scene of animals boarding the ark pair by pair. The result is a relaxing, multi-level space that encourages children to explore and use their imagination.

The "Carnival of the Animals" design was realized using laser cutting and bending technologies. The design covers a total area of 90 square meters and features a variety of different sizes of holes punched into the steel-shell of a column near the window. Through these holes, children can see the painting on the column, creating varying space levels and depths of shadows when light filters through.

The design faced several challenges, primarily due to limited funding. Initially, the steel plates were too thin to bend and would break. Developing a new mold to wrap the steel was costly. However, Studio Ho. managed to strike a balance between design and construction, resulting in a successful and engaging space for children.

Studio Ho.'s "Carnival of the Animals" design has been recognized for its innovation and impact. It was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology.

The design was created in Taipei City, Taiwan, and is a testament to Studio Ho.'s commitment to transforming spaces into lands of hope. The "Carnival of the Animals" design is more than just a waiting area; it's a space where children can ease their tension, explore, and let their imagination run wild.
